92 Women To Follow Who Are Disrupting Tech In France

Europe is ramping up to compete with Silicon Valley and become the number one startup destination. Which means there’s a huge opportunity for the EU to make serious investments in diverse-led startups, and see trillions of dollars in exits. Data shows that founding teams that include a woman outperform their all-male peers by 63%, according to First Round Capital who compared the performance data in their portfolio over 10-years. And venture-backed, women-led tech companies bring in 12% higher revenue than male-owned tech firms.

Despite the data that supports the business case for investing in women-led startups, the funding for them in the EU is declining. Between 2016 and April of 2018 investments in women-led companies decreased from 14% to 9%. That’s an astounding decline considering the uphill battle that women entrepreneurs face to get a minuscule portion of the funding. And what happened to all of those investors commitments to diversify their portfolios?

In France, VC funding for startups rose to €2.7 billion in 2017, compared with just €255 million in 2014, according to Dealroom, a research firm. France is also providing tax credits worth up to €5 billion a year and in May of this year, President Macron announced France would invest €1.5 billion into AI research through 2022.

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo sees this surge in VC funding in France as an opportunity to launch new programs to fix the funding gap for women entrepreneurs. Her Administration has invested serious resources in promoting women in tech and entrepreneurship programs that will increase funding for women-led startups and is why our nonprofit Women Who Tech chose Paris for our next Women Startup Challenge Europe October 25th at City Hall.

Launched by the Foundation of Women, the movement aims to raise funds for associations helping women pursue cases before justice, “so that no woman ever again has to say #MeToo.” (AP Photo/Francois Mori)

For example, Paris has launched incubators and accelerators like Willa and Les Sprinteuses, and the Women4Climate Tech Challenge with C40, which Hidalgo’s Administration actively supports.

“Paris is determined to provide women and girls with the resources to occupy their rightful place in the tech industry! Our Paris Code program includes training courses entirely dedicated to women. We also have an objective of having 50% of girls in our ground-breaking new initiative TUMO Paris, inspired by the amazing TUMO-Erevan example, which teaches 4 000 teenagers per year about all aspects of digital creation,” said Hidalgo.

“Investing in women it is crucial for the future we aspire to. Digital technologies are transforming the world radically. Do we want the apps, the AI, the datas science that will shape our future lives to be designed only by a small minority of people,” asked Hidalgo. Diversity in the tech industry is a question that is essential to our future.”

Hidalgo’s commitment to supporting women in tech and startups is why there’s been a surge of women-led ventures that are disrupting tech. Here’s 92 women founders, investors, and tech leaders in Paris and in France (listed alphabetically) who are shaking up the tech industry that you need to know.
